"The wilder moorland, which is itself lighter and more colourful than its neighbour to the south, Dartmoor, is broken by gentle wooded valleys pushing up from the south, and short torrential streams flowing quickly off the steep northern slopes, often in the company of great tracts of woodland."

Exmoor is one of Britain´s smaller National Parks, but it contains such a splendid variety of coast and countryside that its very compactness becomes one of its greatest assets. Majestic cliffs plunging into the Atlantic along Exmoor´s northern coast are interrupted by gentle wooded valleys carrying rivers from the high moorland down to sheltered fishing  coves. Take the South West Coast Path for the ultimate in sea views.

Inland, rolling hills are grazed by sturdy Exmoor ponies, horned sheep and the wild red deer that were introduced in the 12th century, when Exmoor was a royal hunting reserve. The moorland itself is lighter and more colourful than Dartmoor, its neighbour to the south.

For walkers, Exmoor offers 620 miles (1,000 km) of footpaths in the varied, dramatic scenery of the high open moorland, while the tamer perimeters of the park have everything from traditional seaside entertainments to picturesque villages and ancient churches.
